When You Need This Checklist

Under 49 CFR 396.11, every driver operating a commercial motor vehicle must complete a written inspection report at the end of each day's work. The report must cover the vehicle's operating condition and note any defect or deficiency that could affect safe operation.

49 CFR 396.13 requires the next driver to review the previous report before operating the vehicle, sign it, and confirm that any reported defects have been repaired or do not need repair. Both regulations apply to every motor carrier operating in interstate commerce.

Carriers must retain each completed DVIR for at least 90 days. During a DOT audit or roadside inspection, officers can request these records. An incomplete or missing checklist carries the same consequences as no inspection at all — fines, CSA score impact, and risk to your operating authority.

Still using paper checklists?

Paper checklists get the job done until something goes wrong. Forms disappear from the cab, handwriting is unreadable, and when a driver flags a critical defect there is no way to alert maintenance in real time. When the DOT asks for three months of records, you are sorting through filing cabinets.

RoadReady replaces the paper checklist with a mobile app that walks drivers through every DOT-required inspection item. Reports include photos, GPS coordinates, and timestamps. Defect alerts go out instantly, and every record is stored digitally — searchable and audit-ready from day one.
